Announcement Re: Sailing Thru the Shores 5K – First and foremost, thank you to everyone who has participated or volunteered to assist in past STTS 5K races since the first race in 2007. Since 2007, we have been able to distribute over $15,000 in scholarships to local high school student athletes. We know that the community has enjoyed this event and we have enjoyed raising funds for scholarships to our local high school student athletes. The race was started by Liesle (Travis) Elsey in 2007 as Miss St. Clair Shores. Her goal was to create an event for the city that would raise funds for scholarships for student athletes who demonstrated and understood the meaning of an all around student athlete.Unfortunately, as a result of combined circumstances of organizers starting families, life responsibilities, and the city incurred fee ($2000) to continue the race each year (paying for police presence/road closure before the parade), this event is not able to sustain itself without increased community sponsorship and participation. We hope that a new event will be able to take place in its absence since it is an ideal time to take advantage of fitness and fun in our community while fundraising for local students’ future in education. We will continue to fund the remaining scholarship monies to the high school student athletes over the next several years to ensure that the student athletes in our community are provided an opportunity. We encourage anyone who is willing to provide suggestions to the parade and/or city if you would like to see a similar event in nature continue in the future!
